SSB interview experience - Allahabad and Bangalore

Hi friends, i would like to share my experience, i did two attempts with the selection, one is for UES -university entry scheme at Allahabad and another one for C.D.S -upsc entry in Bangalore.  First i will tel about the UES entry in Allahabad.
It was my final year when i waited eagerly for the advertisement of UES.  After seeing the advertisement i was so happy and also motivated my friends to apply for the same entry.  I downloaded the common application form from the army website and distributed to my friends then explained them about the procedure to apply for this.
For UES entry , we have to get sign from our college principal, i.e. this is a candidate named ----------- who is studying in our college and he will finish the degree by this year... etc.  After finishing all the procedures our group of friends posted the applications in speed post to the reputed address.  We applied in the month of july/august.

Later in January , our group of friends were called for the preliminary round, which is the round to shortlist the candidates who are going to appear for this.   The list from our college was sent to the principal and we were batched to go the preliminary round which was held in VIT- vellore institute of technology university, sixty kilo metre from our college.  The selection process was held for two days as more number of aspirants like you were applied to that.  In the first day the P.P.T-pre placement talk was held, which described the features and benefits about Indian army.  The chief  to organize that ppt was colonel.  He told one thing to the candidates,   "you take care of the nation, then the army take care of your family".  The video presented by them was so motivational and all of us was in good spirit.
Inside the panel,
Later in the panel, we all of us were waiting for our turn.  The process was just five minutes.  This process is entirely different from the normal corporate  process  , as the distance between me and  process  was nearly ten feet. The colonel noted everything while we enter into the hall, our body language, the way as how we asked permission, how we greet him, how we answer to him everything.

The questions in preliminary round are:
  •  Tel about yourself
  •  Why you want to join Indian army"
  •  Achievements in sports?
  •  Extracurricular?
  •  Examples for your leadership?
These were the questions raised, with these questions he easily weight our quality  i.e.(whether this candidate can able to attend main process and can able to compete with a group of guys to show his qualities)

Then the preliminarily round was over and the call letter was received before one month of my scheduled date. i.e. 28th march 2010.
After receiving the call letter, i was so excited and started to prepare for the process as it is the main hurdle to cross.  First i booked train from chennai to Allahabad, i was in waiting list, later i got a seat at the last minute.
 Train journey:
My dad came to chennai central railway station to send off me to Allahabad, the train started at 3 pm, sangamithra express.  I got many new friends in the train and some of them are repeaters for this, so i got some advise from them.  We chat a lot and also met an air force Sargent, he told and advised us many things about the same.  He told many brave activities from his service, it was so inspirational for us.

Later we reached the Allahabad railway station at 1 am mid night, and arranged a room to stay and get refreshed, we group of train friends planned and went to sangamithra and enjoyed the boating.

 Arrival Day:
On the arrival day, we came to the selection centre by an army bus.
A still from candidate line.

We were welcomed and checked by the officials for date of birth verification, filling up the PIQ - Personal Identification Questionaire , this is our bio data as we have to fill all our details in this paper and verification of candidate identification etc are conducted on the same day of the arrival.   Then got instructions as how to behave in centers and in public(Allahabad city).  The code of conduct in mess etc.    i.e. We should wear shoe all over the centers  and no chapels are allowed.  The candidate should behave as gentlemen.  There are many boards .  We were allotted chest numbers .  Got bed ,pillow, mosquito netlon etc.  In  few minutes  our room mates mingled with  each other and cracked jokes, told about their previous experiences,  I heard that keenly as it was first time for me.  All liked to talk with me as im the only Tamilan  from south India, others are from north such as up, Maharashtra  Bihar, Bhopal etc,  I loved their speech and we enjoyed a lot at our stay in our candidate line.

 Day-1-Screening
This is the crucial day for all candidates as there is lot of short listings comes from this day.  We wake up early in the morning by 4 am and we are ready for the assessments by 6 am. (delicious breakfast is over gentleman)  canteen time is above...
In the first day, we were given analytical assessment consists of verbal and nonverbal, PPDT-picture perception and description followed group discussion.  For the analytical assessment, normal intelligent student needs no preparation, if you wish, practice the non verbal part well from r.s. agarwal or else if you prepared for your campus selections just go through that  then for the ppdt and gd, we need some extra preparation. In first day if we are with confidence , and speak something relevantly, then surely we are in.

If you want to know more about first day screening and preparation tips click here.
I was given a picture such as two persons are speaking in a table.  I wrote about they are speaking about the preservation of tiger.  Most of the men in the group wrote the same as that time hot topic of the nation was to preserve the tiger as it is a national animal. After this we have to give an individual narration about our story,  I did some what best with some stammering. but i made to understand my point clearly at the end .  After this there will be a gd, in which all have to talk something about the picture. ie.We have to talk about our narration(own story) and come to a common conclusion, we all came to some conclusion. i.e. two persons were speaking about the preservation of tiger and bla bla.. since to come to an common conclusion we took the national issue(tiger preservation) and everyone agreed with that.

After this we were waited for the results of the day 1, the results were declared and some of the friends were screened out.  We felt little sad and motivated them for the next try, they too motivated us for the upcoming challenging days.  Later the new short listed candidates  were allotted new chest numbers and mine was 28.
In my group all of the guy z were so cool and nice.  Why i am telling is out of 10 persons in my group 2 got recommended for the medicals. To know more about medical examination click here.

Day-2-Psychological Tests
In the second day the real evaluation begins, as today is the psychological evaluation day.  Each candidate is assessed by this and no one can escape from this, as it maps clearly about our personality, whether we are eligible for defense services or not.  They check all olq from this evaluation. All the candidates have to sit in order in the auditorium based on their chest numbers. And we were instructed by the psychologists about the tests and rules to be followed by the candidate in the tests.  The assessments conducted were thematic appreciation -TAT, word association -WAT, situation reaction -SRT, self description-SD.  I had only little knowledge about these assesment during that time as it was my first time, so i did some what well.  At that instant i had satisfaction about my performance, later only i realized that i did so many mistakes,  In the tat, we have to write stories, which are positive, there should be some problem and we should over come those problems at the end of the story (note: the hero should not be a cause for the problem, also the problem should be quite normal and faced by the candidate in the normal life), but i don't know these things at that moment so i wrote a story for the picture shown to me.  In the word association -wat, we have to write the sentence which comes first to our mind, which shows our all olq's, but i write what ever words, because of lack of exposure at that time.  In self description i did well as i prepared it very well before, Then in SRT, i responded to all situations well, but the handwriting was not good, the same was also in tat.  So over all performance was not good. But at that time i felt satisfied with my performance.

Day 3 & 4-Group Tasks & Individual Tasks
In this day, they psychologist give a map about the candidate psyche.  The group testing officer (GTO) usually his rank may be in major.  He checks in our group tasks, that whether the things we shown in psychology is true. its true gentleman, we cant be different in group tasks, that is what we shown as our self in psychology.  Even though if the candidates try to be over smart, they will be easily caught by the GTO's,  the various ground tasks are group discussion, military planning exercises, progressive group task, snake race, individual tasks, command task, half group task , final group task etc.

Group discussion:-
Two Gd topics were given, one is optional and another one is compulsory.  In my gd, i spoke one or two times, as i found some what difficult to talk .  The topic was merits and demerits of the internet.  I spoke twice but it was agreed by the team. I maintained the correct body language for Gd,  even after giving our points we should observe the speakers keenly,  the GTO watch this as it seems you are good observer.

Later in military planning exercises,  military planning exercises is a set of real life problem, which you may face while you are going to an important work(exam, hospital etc)i.e. you group of friends going to exam in bus, suddenly you people are getting news that bomb in bus and bus is traveling  in bridge, later you see a boat is mishaping under the bridge etc.. Like this for my situation i  planned a execution, for set of problems  but i missed the time constraint. So be aware of the time constraint and priority of the problem in detail.  Practice is needed for this.

Progressive Group Task,  PGT is  a set of obstacles with set of rules.  The group has to complete the obstacle within the stipulated time without eliminating the rules.

i.e. We should not touch the red and black paint, also the using materials(plank, balli, rope) can touch only white and black.  Then in my progressive group tasks, i gave some ideas  gentlemen only once or twice,  as this was the first attempt, the candidate with basic intelligence, good fluency and commanding voice will do well in  progressive group tasks. The difficulty of the task increases from one task to another.  Just obey the rules of the gto.  Never violate the rules.  Be an active member of the group.

Half group task, For the half group tasks the rules are same as the pgt, but the group is only divided into two, if you feel that you cant able to express  your ideas in the whole group, then this is the right chance to express your ideas.

The group is divided into two groups, and each group is given separate tasks.  Each group is not allowed to see other groups when they are doing.  As i found some what easy to express my ideas i expressed it clearly and it worked well.

Group Obstacle Race or snake race,

In this the whole group has to carry a snake like load which is made  up of jute.  The rules are at least three people from the group should carry the snake while crossing the obstacle also it should be parallel to the ground  while running from one obstacle to another one.  These are the rules and also in the obstacles there will be out of bound areas where it is painted in red.  We should not violate the rules i.e. should not touch the red if we touch the red , the candidate ( or a member from group) have to repeat the task.
Choosing war cry:  In this the group has to choose a war cry.  i..e(jai hind, vande matram etc).  In this we have to show our real team sprit and helping tendancy by giving our shoulders to cross the long wall.

Lecturette:     This is also called as extempore.  Where the candidate has to chose one chit with in tat chit three topis were available,  and we have to chose one topic and speak for three minutes.  Also we get three minutes preparation to talk about the topic. The candidates were sitting in a row based on chest numbers,  for example from 1 - 10.  While the chest number 1 is narrating the chest number 2 has to prepare for three minutes and the series goes on.  I chosen the topic "the first day in my college life".  I spoke well.

Individual Tasks:   In the individual tasks, there will be ten obstacles and we have to finish each obstacles at any order.

Each obstacles carry marks based on their difficulty.  The obstacles are tarzon rope, burma bridge, balance walked. fenced drum, etc.
Out of 10 I finished 8 in this.  Never show fear in the face and activity also dont overcome the rules in this.

Command Task:   In the command task,  There will be one obstacle like we seen in pgt,  In this we have to pick up two candidates from our group to help us, the candidate has to extract and order work from the team members to finish the task and rules are same.  At first i got some difficulties in solving the task but at the i got idea and solved the tasks.

Final Group Task:    Final group task is the last task of the group tasks, as in this the rules and task were same as pgt,  This is the final chance for the candidates to show their excellence.
In this i gave some  ideas to the group.

At the end of the third day we went to Allahabad city and saw places such as allahabad high court, Anand bhavan, Sangam etc.

Personal Interview (PI):     My  PI  went for nearly 40 minutes,  In this the officer extracted me fully about my piq and my self description.  I went into the hall with nervous but my self confident over came tat.  I entered the room and wished the president.  He too replied and gave permission to sit in the chair provided to me.  He asked me first question , What is manjakuppam?  As my area of resident is manjakuppam , but i already prepared for this so i answered him and he was impressed.   Then he asked me about PIQ, how much loan is there for my family, then my tenth, twelveth roll no, the my rank in AIEEE exams, and all.  He asked which is your favourite subject and why, which subject you dont like why etc. He asked me what is your recent achievement in studies, i replied him that there is a paper in engineering called DSP - Digital Signal Processing, students used to call it as Degree Stopping Paper as it is very tough with derivations, but i worked well and scored 83 to stood second in department.  The same he cross checked me in the conference as what is DSP.
Then he trigged out the RFQ- rapid fire questions which contains the set of ten or questions, i tried to answer the maximum, but i failed to answer a few.  Later he grilled me about my close friend and what he tells about me then about the bad habit in me, what my mom say about me and what she likes in me, dislikes in me.  etc.Whats my view on telangana issue and why.

Conference Day:  The judgement day, all of the officers were sitting in full uniform, all of them got questions that how was your stay and any suggestions like that. The president cross checked me with my personal interivew answers.  Then the results were announced out of this three got recommended with in this two of them were from my group.  One year completed and i still have contact with them.  Lovable guyz....................

This is my experience and also dont forget to read the bangalore experience of my self  that is following this only.  If you want tips and techniques study the whole blog since im sharing these as i got little knowledge  in selection methodology by talking to the candidates who are got recommended.
The recommended candidates undergo medical check up at the army hospital.

BANGALORE SSB INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE:-

Friends, i would like to share my second experience in bangalore.  The mode of entry by which i got selected for this is through CDS.  During my final year i applied for the CDS exam and wrote well..  Actually the exam was bit easy and i didnt prepared anything specially for the exam.  During that time i prepared for my campus selection process and busy with my aptitude books, so i cracked the CDS exam well.  Guyz all persons can easily crack the mathematics and english part but the general knowledge part is difficult, so it needs a little preparation.  Ok let we come to the selection part.  As usual i arrived on the reporting day in railway station and came by the selection centre bus to the selection centre.  The initial enquiries on screening day( as i mentioned in the allahabad experience is same only) later we were allotted chest numbers and settled in the rooms got friends.  In this time i prepared well and rectified the mistakes as i did in the allahabad board.  So came up with confidence to crack the process with full self confidence. The overall stay was good in bangalore board, this is the place where candidates are staying during their five day stay.
Bangalore SSB Centre
Screening Day - Day 1:-

This is the day which decides whether we are going to stay for the remaining four days or not.  Also the  OIR test or Officer Intelligence Rating test is important as the final merit list for the selection of candidates into the academy is based on this marks( i came to know this from one of my friend, he got selected for OTA).  So i prepared well the non verbal reasoning and all.  Also i did the written part well.  After this the PPDT were conducted.  This was conducted by the psychologist who is a old soft lady, why i am telling her as so soft means, she describes about the process very elaborately without any urgency and her way of approach and speech motives every aspirants.
Later the procedure for the PPDT is same, but it is quite different from the allahabad board as in this there is square box in the top of the answer sheet for PPDT.  In this box we have to point out as which person we are chosing as hero, and his/her sex(m/f), age, mood(+/-).  Later after this box we have to write the story.  My experience in this is i got a PPDT hazy picture that a boy stands in a bridge.  I wrote that a boy named ... he is a new civil engineer while his final year engineering he was keenly searching to do his project, at that time he saw a tender notice in the news paper for the building of new bridge for the common wealth games in new delhi(i.e. tat time common wealth games was held..... relating the current affairs in our ppdt) he gave a new innovative blue print with efforts, and his idea was accepted by the CWG board like that.  I also narrated in the PPDT description about my story and all of the group members agreed my story and some appreciated my story.  After this we have a discussion and came to some conclusion,  between this i talked thrice and gave a chance for a weak person in the group as he didnt got a chance to speak out.  I was confident enough that i will get in.  With my efforts and prayers i was selected in the first day and got a new chest number.

Day 2 - Psychology:-

For the psychology i practiced a lot since i did so many mistakes in the allahabad board, friends why iam telling about mistakes in this blog means, just please dont do the same mistake in your process just correct these before your selection.
The pattern for the psychology is same as i told in the allahabad experience.  These were TAT - Thematic Appreciation , WAT - Word Association , SRT - Situation Reaction , SD- Self Description.

For the psychology i have started to prepared after my allahabad process itself, since this plays a vital role in the selection of candidates.  Let me explain how i prepared, For the TAT, i imagine a situation and write a story based on that picture.  I didnt practiced these things through any books, i  imagine a situation where a boy of our age is working or doing something in that picture in different situations.  For TAT pictures click here.  I put a separate note and write a story what ever comes to my mind with in the time limit.  Later i my self evaluated the story that whether it is positive, what the hero does in the story and result of the story.
My experience in that TAT was good as i wrote nice positive stories with good out comes.  I feel that this is due to my practice.  So practice well as i told.

For the WAT, how i prepared was while reading words in news paper or hearing words while speaking i.e. the word should be related to the world issue, individual character or any negative words,  eg  words related to world issue means atom, war, pollution ..... and words related to individual character means love,. mother, affection, ...... and words related to negative words means thief, betray, .......... practice your self by your mind with positive outcome if sentences with in the stipulated time.  As this shows that, you itself creating your self a positive frame of mind set and you are not following any books and others character.  So if you follow these tips you will show your own psychology which gives a positive frame of mind in the assessments by showing your olq's. By these practice i wrote all the words positively and i was satisfied with my performance.

For SRT, The SRT is the situations in which we have to react as good citizen.  For SRT how i practiced was , while seeing a tough situation in your college, or work place or any tough scenarios  that we see in tv, or reading in news paper, i put myself in that scenario and try to react to that situation.  Guyz follow these which also improves your decision making capability even in your normal life. In the SRT out of 60 i did only 30 but i was satisfied myself that the quality of that 30 was good ,  In defence they are expecting the quality and not the quantity.  But all other members did 45 on an average.  Also in the bangalore board what i felt was the the space given to write the responses for the SRT is so small.  So practice well to write small and fastly to perform well in this task.

For SD, Self Description is important as you may expect questions from these areas while attending your  PI .  How i prepared for the SD was i asked my dad, friends, lecture, girl friend as how you are think about me and tel me the positive and negative points from me also tel what you are expecting from me.  All gave good/bad responses and i collected these things.  I wrote separate two types of answers for the SD, i.e. i)What my parents, friends, teachers say about me and ii) what i will say about my parents, teachers and friends.  Just be true in this part and tell the  PI if you have any shortcomings but don't forget to tel that what are the steps u have taken to over come those short comings  i.e. complained by your parents, teachers and friends.in the SD.
Thus the psychology day was over and we all went out for different shopping malls in Bangalore and enjoyed the city.

Day 3 Group Task:

In the Bangalore board some times the GTOr may conduct all the tasks in the same day itself and the fourth day will be free for us.  The same was happened in my case also.
The first task was GD, and the topic was naxallism, i didn't initiated this, as i missed the chance but i spoke well in this, since, i gave solutions for the discussion three times.  Guyz as a good leader we should try to give out solutions for the problems. Click here to know more about leadership. Even in your GD also, if you find your group is debating with each other, just dont try to calm them, give a solution for the issue.  Then you will be noticed automatically by your GTO.  As i told earlier in the allahabad experience, there will be two GD, i forget the topic of another GD.

After the GD, the PGT were started, in this the rules were same as the previous one.  I actively participated in the group and tried my level best.  Then the PGT were over with increasing level in the difficulties.

After this the individual lecturette was held and topic i chosen out of three was nuclear agreement and i talked all positive points about the agreement.  I stammered while my lecturette.  Guyz while narrating dont look at the GTO just look your group and talk casually, with correct body language.  Practice on different topics by talking your self for three minutes.

Individtual tasks, in the individual tasks, i completed 8 out of 10.  The mistake which i did in the individual task is while waiting for our turn we should not see the persons who is doing the tasks,  But what happened was one guy fell down while doing the tasks from height, so suddenly i turned and saw him. ( i violated the rule) i saw him with helping tendancy but as per rules i violated the rule.  My GTO saw me and turned my face,  so gyz jus control yourself and concentrate more that you should not violate any rule in the GTO tasks.

Later in the snake race, i followed the rule correctly i helped my team well to cross the obstacles and we won in that race.  Then in the MPE - Military Planning Exercises, the GTO explained the problem well and i understood the problem and priorised the problem based on its severity.
I participated well in the discussion after this i told my point.  Later we selected a candidate to narrate the discussion.  Guys in bangalore i attended in the winter season and morning 6.30 am, it was so cool and we people sufered to write well with good handwriting in that chill weather.  Beyond this all other GTO tasks went good.

Personal Interview(PI):-

The PI  held for me nearly 30 mins and the name of the interiview officer is mr.nehru, he is an air force officer his rank may be equivalent to colonel in army.  For the  PI  preparation just write in a paper about piq and your answer for those piq questions, write in  a note about different question format by framing yourself with your piq itself,  If you practice, these it will help you to move the  PI to your side.  Then make sure about your hobbies as what you are doing in your free time,  what ever it may be singing, dancing, playing games etc.  But be true to the board and dont bluff.  Have a vast knowledge about your principal hobbies. Also be clear in what you are writing the in self description also practice your self by framing different questions from the self description. Then in the my experience he welcomed me to the  PI room with smile and gave me a seat.  He  grilled me from my piq and i told everything from the piq. He asked how u prepared for this  PI while comparing to the allahabad.  He just smiling to our self and getting all good and bad points from our mouth itself.  then he asked how u came to know about regular news, then in my piq i mentioned that i am cricket player.  He asked me, you are a bowler or batsman,  i replied  i am a bowler.  He asked how you will apply physics for the swing in bowling.   I explained the concepts of swing and how it happens.  But he was not satisfied and he asked what principle we are applying.  i agreed and said sory sir, i dont know the answer later he replied benrollis principle(pressure), then how you will implement physics laws in sugar cane juice production , in technicals such as what is optical fibre, total internal reflection , computer networks etc. Then in the rapid fire round RPF, he triggered me a set of ten questions that how i behave with my colleagues in office, what my hr or team leader say about me etc.  I tried to answered most but missed some things.  The whole process was good and i tried my level best in that.  After the process was over i came out by thanking the officer. The overall performance was good for my preparations.

Later the results were declared out of 80 members 3 were declared selected.  I returned home, even though i was not selected but came with new experience, friends and all i am satisfied with those.
The selected candidates will undergo medical check up at the military hospital.  To know more about medical check up click here

  12. @hari, We cant tell anything about selection ratio friend. The fact is if all the candidates in SSB performs well, surely they will select all. Else if all the candidates doesnt satisfy them with their qualities, surely no body will get selected. This is the truth. They expect the all OLQ's. So we cant say about selection ratio.

  20. Hi anand paul,

You will get your SSB call letter after the month of january, since they will mingle these two courses, ie. UES and TGC {they will put the remaining waiting list recommended candidates from UES to TGC or upcoming SSC courses}. 31. vignesh: No message for me buddy?

    ReplyDelete
  32. @Shrey, sorry i didnt noticed your comment friend.

Nothing tricky questions yaar, they will grill your answers only. For example, if the interviewer asks you why you are named as shrey, for this you may answer as '.......... anything'. he wil raise another new question from this.

It may look easier but this is the really place where we should not lose our ground. So practice more questions from your PIQ itself so tackle this type of environment. Read this link fully brother, you may get idea after this.http://www.ssbinterviewtips.com/p/day-4-group-task-ii.html

  34. @Vihnesh: Brother,I have faced the PI but wasnt good with my replies. But they say that some of the questions like whom are you close to is asked deliberately to understand if the candidate is biased in nature. If he discriminates between his parents and chooses one over the other then it is concluded that the candidate believes in discrimination..then,he/she is asked abt the teacher whom he/she didnt like..It is said that one should never say that he/she has disliked any of his teacher coz teachers are guides and mentors..So we should not defame them..I was looking for info abt such tricky questions from u.

  60. Hello, the physical test for women are same as men,
only the changes are the intensity level only varies.
For example, in individual obstacles, the male has to cross two drums at a stretch while the girl candidate has to cross one drum. Like this these things varies madam.

  68. @Anil, yes surely they will give time, you can see in the merit list itself brother. There is a column texting "marklist/provision awaited" . So they will give time, and before the joining date you have to submit thats all. Dont worry about this.
In our India, there are lot of colleges with different result dates and procedures. So dont worry about this, cool :)

if they want to check your organizational ability, then they will ask question such as
    1) how will you conduct a bike race competition?
else they want to find your emotional stability means,
    they may ask such as
    2) if you met accident due to bike race, before the board exam, what will you do, like that..
What ever, cool with your replies, be positive and truthful. Its the matter. All the best

This year I have again passed the written exams of NDA and I am confused whether I should go for SSB training or not.
So kindly give me your valuable suggestion!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. @Anonymous, if you feel that you need trainig means go ahead, else leave friend. Since training just tells you what happens in SSB and how you should behave. Other than this everything depends on you only, since in the training they cant able to change your psychological set of mind set which is framed for 16+ years from your birth in 10 or 5 days. Cool, confident enough, be positve. Then success is yours. All the best friend
