Life at IMA Dehradun

Life of a GC - Gentleman Cadet at IMA - Indian Military Academy Dehradun
Very first thing while going to IMA is that you will be going to be called as gentleman cadet their GC’s.  You will undergo military training and various other activities which will be going to take you to the heights of commissioned officer that is to build that command and that latitude.  In IMA basically cadets come via various tests and entries like NDA/ACC/TGC/CDSE.  The main difference b/w the life of IMA and OTA is here nature of commission is permanent and their nature of commission is short service.  In IMA technical and non technical graduates are trained together for initial one year and then they will be get send for further specialization.  One reason for this is that the academy expects its graduates to uphold the highest moral and ethical values. Inscribed in the oak panelling at the Eastern entrance of the Chetwode Hall is the academy's credo, excerpted from the speech of Field Marshal Chetwode at the inauguration of the academy.
The safety, honour and welfare of your country come first, always and every time.
The honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next.
Your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and every time.
When we start talking about life of IMA there are so many things which comes in your mind.  Besides usual military basic training GC’s undergo so many rigorous activities which change you mental aptitude and maturity level to. You start feeling more confident in terms of taking quick decisions. Your definition for yourself is basically changed after that training. GC’s from NDA/ACC who have already undergone three years of tough training programme were already groomed for same so its seems bit unsettling for a fresh GC. The first things which happens to GC is haircut except Sikh GC’s all remaining GC’s will get katora cut. You all will be allotted your identity numbers, i-cards, rooms or say cabin, cycles. Uniforms and many more things basically it’s starting to convert u from GC to lieutenant. That is transition of men to gentleman. You will also be allotted one company which is just like house allotted in schools for better management and to built leadership and competitive skills. Basically you will get some series of activities via which you will easily get settle into that fauji enviourment. In that meantime you will be getting less ragda as compared to which you are going to get in coming couple of months. Basically you are going to get more and more privileges as you will become senior and if we understand it is required too because in fauj hierarchy matters a lot. Their every on is in need to learn how to wish how to greet how to walk how to eat sum total of everything From taking bath to till night you will get one schedule and by the starting of one month you will assure yourself to learn all the things because after that
nobody is going to show leniency. Except academics almost you are going to do all activities along with your company. Which most usually include, Weak PT for GC's requiring additional training to clear the physical standards of academy, Weak Swimming for the dead sinkers, ED or extra drill for GCs.

GC’s will be inspected on daily basis by officers of different level and one who is not lucky will be get severely affected by getting odd punishments at odd times but again it lasts for good after all this is that ragda which going to bring out true man out of you. Basically being junior there you will defiantly be undergoing some sort of activity where mental physical and all other strength are required. On daily basis you will be experiencing new challenges, new techniques to get punished. The most mind blowing experiences as a cadet are undoubtedly the night long run back when they compete as companies with each other to finish first in an exercise testing our very limits. It involves navigating long distances almost all night long (over 60km in difficult terrain) carrying full battle load over 20 kgs in addition to peculiar loads like the rocket launcher, modified stretcher and so on. At the end of which you will be feeling as if you have achieved something which seems out of world to you. Schedule in IMA is so tight and rigid that you can’t even imagine how much capable you become after following that for particular pace of time and they will become most cherish able moments of your life.
