NATO and its purpose

North Atlantic treaty organization is an inter governmental military alliance based Atlantic treaty organization which was signed in April 1949.

Main motive of organization is to constitute a system of collective defence whereby its member states agrees to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party.

• Its HEADQUARTERS is at BRUSSELS, BELGIUM.
• Present secretary general is ANDERS FOGH {Denmark}.
• Working LANGUAGE of NATO is English/French.
• Total countries: 28
Newest members: Albania and Crotia joined in 2009.
• Additional 22 countries participate in NATO peace processes and 15 countries in the dialogue programs.
• The lord ismay stated in 1949 {1st  NATO secretary general} our goal is “TO KEEP RUSSIANS OUT, GERMANS DOWN AND AMERICANS IN”

Combined military spending of NATO is 70 percent of world defence spending.

NATO MILITARY OPERATIONS:

• Bosnia and Herzegovina intervention: This was took place after the breakup of yugosalavia .NATO air strike ended up this war.
• Kosvo intervention: This took place because of Albanian civilian in kosvo. The 78 day bombing campaign was started by NATO resulted in the peacekeeping mission.
• Afghanistan war: The 11 sep attack in US cause NATO to invoke article five of NATO charter which says attack on one country shall be considered as attack on all.
• Iraq war: In Iraq training mission NATO aimed to train Iraqi people or Iraqi security forces
• Gulf of Aden anti –piracy: NATO operates maritime traffic in gulf of adan and Indian Ocean to save it from Somali pirates.
• Libya intervention: Libyan civil war took place after under leadership of colonel Gaddafi which was called for ceasefire by UN resulted into protection of civilians.

NATO Defence Ministers move forward with Connected Forces agenda
Defence Ministers from allied countries met on Tuesday (22 October) in Brussels and agreed to ensure that the experience of 20 years of operations in Afghanistan, in the Balkans and elsewhere is retained through more training and exercises. Ministers agreed on key elements of the Connected Forces Initiative and that experts will now work on it as a matter of priority.

NATO Allies and partners stress support for Afghan Security Forces
NATO Allies and ISAF partners on Wednesday (23 October 2013) discussed with their Afghan counterpart progress in Afghanistan and planning for the post-2014 mission to train, advise and assist Afghan Security Forces. “We have moved closer to putting that mission in place. Our military commanders have reviewed planning and identified in broad terms the key elements we require to set up the mission,” NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.

NATO-Russia Council discusses widening cooperation
NATO Defence Ministers together with their Russian counterpart, Sergey Shoygu, discussed ways to widen their practical cooperation and exchanged views on pressing events on the international agenda, including Syria, during a NATO-Russia Council (NRC) meeting on Wednesday (23 October 2013). “We are doing more together an ever before and counter-terrorism is a centre-piece of our cooperation,” said NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
