Indo Russian Trade and Defence Deal
  • India and Russia has bilateral relations with each other.Both the countries have been trying fort last decade to strengthen their bilateral and multilateral engagements. Russia is again emerging as a reliable defence partner of India in the post cold war period.
  • We both are the member of BRICS. It provided strategic relationship between the two countries as it aims to develop multilateral global order in place of USA and other west dominated countries.
  • India has importance to her relations with Russia, which can be seen from the fact that it is one of the five countries, with whom it has made arrangements for regular annual summit.
  • Russia has been consistent in her support to India’s claim for permanent membership in Security Council which is also called as VETO power.
  • Russia’s encouraging India’s role in security architecture of central ASIA by supporting her member ship to Sanghai organization. 
  • The visit of Russian president Vladmir Putin to India marked another milestone.
  • The joint statement signed is termed as the partnership of mutual benefit and better world which tells us that the partnership of these countries is to be used for larger benefit. 

How we regained:
  • India lost the relationship ground in the presidency of Boris Yelstin (1992-2000) witnessed shard downfall in the level of bilateral talks and relationship.
  • India too adopted a pragmatic approach to foreign policy & reconstructed relations with US and East Asia.
  • Yelstin however visited India only once in his tenure. 
  • Our relations moved up by Putin in 2000, relations b/w Russia and India moved up to regain the lost ground.
Few latest signed agreements are:
  • Foreign office consultation which means to close the principal consultation b/w foreign offices of two countries.
  • Cooperation in field of science and technology through research projects
  • Cultural exchange agreement in form of art and literature Promotion of FDI.
  • MOU’s in field of space research and navigation based system.
  • Contract agreement for delivery of  MI-17 helicopters and 42 sukhoi technological kits for licensed production in India.
  • Strategic cooperation in field of IT / Pharmacy/ software development.
  • To set up Russian model industries for the manufacturing of KA & Mi helicopters.
Major components of relationship:
 Politics, defence, civil nuclear energy, anti-terrorism co-operation and space.
Both countries are members of many international bodies where they jointly collaborate closely on matters of shared national interest. Important examples include the UN, BRICS, G20 and SCO where India has observer status and has been asked by Russia to become a full member. Russia has stated publicly that it supports India receiving a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. In addition, Russia has expressed interest in joining SAARC with observer status in which India is a founding member.

Military relations:
  • India and Russia have several major joint military programmes including:
  • BrahMos cruise missile programme
  • 5th generation fighter jet programme
  • Sukhoi Su-30MKI programme (230+ to be built by Hindustan Aeronautics)
  • Ilyushin/HAL Tactical Transport Aircraft
Additionally, India has purchased/leased various military hardware from Russia:
  • T-90S Bhishma with over 1000 to be built in India
  • Akula-II nuclear submarine (2 to be leased with an option to buy when the lease expires)
  • INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier programme
  • Tu-22M3 bombers (4 ordered)
  • US$900 million upgrade of MiG-29
  • Mil Mi-17 (80 ordered)
  • Ilyushin Il-76 Candid (6 ordered to fit Israeli Phalcon radar)
  • The Farkhor Air Base in Tajikistan is currently jointly operated by India and Russia.
